Sony's one-point stereo ECM series is not great, but it would work better than the pair of omnis which is stuck on the Edirol. I wonder how you would use the Edirol's mics for a show. Do you put the whole thing on a tall stand and then use a remote control for the computer part, or hand-hold the thing all night, or run it on a low stand so you can push the buttons, or use a tall stand and just Set-it-and-forget-it? ;-(

Audiotechnicas > JB3 sound like the best low-cost/low maintenance rig, but you might like to generate masters on a removable format like DAT or MD. . . Or not!?

Short answer...you don't. :) It has a line/mic in as well so you can bypass the external mics.

It just seems a little odd to get a system that includes mics, and then not to use them. . . but amateur field recording is not rocket science. The built-in's would come in handy if you were ever late setting up, or just as backup. . . Hm.
